Berkley Department of Public Safety - Greenfield Police Pursuit

On Monday, May 25, 2020, at approximately 10 PM, Berkley Department of Public Safety Officers were dispatched to a residence on Ellwood north of Catalpa on a report of a stalking incident. As officers arrived in the area, a 2012 Chevrolet Cruze, being driven by the suspect, was observed leaving the area. A Berkley DPS officer attempted to make a traffic stop on the vehicle on southbound Greenfield north of Catalpa. The vehicle failed to stop for the officer and fled southbound on Greenfield. The suspect disregarded the red traffic signal at 11 Mile Road and crashed into another vehicle and a light pole. The suspect driving the Chevrolet, a 53-year-old male resident of Warren, sustained severe injuries in the crash. BDPS public safety officers immediately removed the suspect from the vehicle and began life-saving measures, including CPR. The suspect was transported to Beaumont Hospital Royal Oak, where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the second vehicle sustained minor injuries. There were no other injuries.

Because the crash occurred in Southfield, the Southfield Police Department is conducting the fatal crash investigation. The Berkley Department of Public Safety continues to investigate the incident that occurred in Berkley.

This is an active investigation and no further information will be released at this time.
