Snow
and Ice Control
Policies & Priorities
The Department of Public Works takes pride in our performance each winter. Decisions are made at the time of the snowfall to determine the best method to handle the situation. Each snow/ice storm is different. We consider variables, such as temperature, snowfall rate, actual/predicted accumulation, and time of day when we develop our plowing/salting plans for a particular storm event.
What
are the City’s snow/ice removal priorities?
1st Priority Streets:
- Twelve-Mile
- Coolidge
- Eleven-Mile
- Catalpa
- Webster
2nd Priority Streets: If school is in session, plowing around all schools is our next concern. If the school is not in session (a weekend or at night), they will be plowed in our normal schedule.
- All fire routes and remaining major roads are next.
- We plow residential streets after approximately three to four inches of snow.
- Costs and environmental issues prohibit salting all residential streets.
- The department salts when icy conditions exist on residential streets, intersections, slopes and curves.
Do Your Part to Keep Streets Clear
Please do your part by remembering to remove your car from the road so crews can do a better job. It is illegal to plow, shovel or otherwise deposit snow into the street.
