I am interested in serving on a City Board. How can I find out what positions are open and how do I apply?

A list of current vacancies is available here.  An application for appointment can be submitted by mail. To mail in your application, download and complete the application form and mail it to the City Clerk’s office.

Who is eligible to vote in Berkley?

All Berkley residents 18 or older who have registered to vote at least 30 days prior to the election may vote.

Can I register to vote on-line?

No. An original signature is required to register to vote.

How do I register to vote?

You can register to vote at the City Clerk’s Office, Michigan Secretary of State office or by using the Federal Mail-In Voter Registration Form. Voter registration must be completed at least 30 days prior to an election. Important! If you register to vote by mail and are under 60 years of age, you must vote in person for your first election in the City of Berkley.

How can I find out where I vote?

Your voting precinct is listed on your voter registration card as “polling location.” If you cannot find your card, call the Clerk’s office at 248-658-3310 or check on-line at the Michigan Voter Information Center.

What are the criteria for voting by absentee ballot?

Anyone meeting the following criteria is eligible to vote by absentee ballot:

  • 60 years of age or older.
  • physically unable to attend the polls without assistance of another.
  • appointed as a precinct inspector in a precinct other than the precinct where you reside.
  • expect to be absent from the community in which you are registered for the entire time the polls are open on Election Day.
  • cannot attend the polls because of the tenets of my religion.
  • cannot attend the polls because of confinement to jail awaiting arraignment or trial.

Can I apply for an absentee ballot on-line or by e-mail?

No.  An original signature is required to obtain an Absentee Ballot. Call the Clerk's office at

248-658-3310 and request that an application be mailed to you.

Do pets have to be licensed? Is there a limit on how may dogs or cats I can have?

All dogs and cats over 4 months old must be licensed. There is a limit of 3 dogs or 3 cats or combination per household.

How do I get a license and how much does it cost?

One, two, or three-year licenses are available and cannot be issued beyond the expiration of the rabies vaccination. Licenses may be renewed either in person or by mail at the Clerk’s Office, Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
