Message from the Mayor

June 2007

It's June.  The 2007-2008 City budget has been approved.  the City Council will meet only once per month through the month of September.

Traffic on Eleven Mile Road has been reduced to one lane heading west between Greenfield and Coolidge.  That project includes a new water main, sewer and electric supply, as well as a new roadway and sidewalks.  Construction is scheduled to be completed in November.

City parking lots on Twelve Mile Road and at City Hall will be resurfaced.  Soon we will be enjoying the sight and colors of flowers blooming on Twelve Mile Road in planters and hanging baskets.  Until then we need only to drive west on 12 Mile, and turn left on Ellwood to enjoy the beautiful flowers, landscaping and statuary at Historical Courtyards and Gardens.

Special events scheduled for June include:

Berkley Art Bash

Registration for the Berkley Summer Reading Program will begin Tuesday, June 19th.  This year's theme is "Get a Clue at Your Library," and includes a program for every age group, from infants to seniors.

  • infant to 5 years:  Read to Me
  • grades 1 to 5:  Independent Readers
  • grades 6 to 12:  "YNK"
  • everyone else:  "Sisters in Crime"

Check out these programs and activities.  These, and all Berkley events take place, thanks to the work of volunteers, organizations, and City employees who give their time, talents and skills to enhance the quality of life in our wonderful city.

Finally, I must issue a plea to you who enjoy history, you who are curious about Berkley's past, and you who want the City of Berkley to have a definitive history of the City prepared and published in hard cover.  Join the Berkley Historical Committee.  Call Mary Hughes at 248-546-2470.
