Message from the Mayor

December 2007

In preparing this last mayor's message of 2007, I wondered what the City Council has accomplished during the many meetings.  At the end of the first December meeting we had acted on 58 Resolutions, 97 motions and 6 Ordinances. We studied the documents, listened to explanations from consultants and staff, and we voted.  Resolutions were read to recognize retirees and exemplary volunteers, to express our condolences and to schedule special city events.

Our deliberations included the approval of a change in Ice Arena operations.  We approved the purchases of a new fire truck, a telescopic boom forklift, digital recorder boxes and a lawn mower- to cite a few examples of capital outlay.  These and other expenditures are the result of thorough research, a bidding process, and the expert analysis of city employees, department directors, the City Manager and Finance Director.

Work on Eleven Mile Road from Greenfield to Coolidge began in the spring and continues.  Residents and businesses have shown patience and forbearance during this phase of complete reconstruction of the roadway.  Construction between Coolidge and Woodward will begin as soon as weather permits- in March or April.  If your home or business is located in that construction area, you will receive notices of public meetings.  I urge you to attend so that you will be informed regarding the project schedule.

Looking forward to 2008 and beyond, the Master Plan that was completed by the Planning Commission and accepted by the Council provides a vision of what Berkley might become.  The Planning Commission has examined, discussed and approved plans for new and renovated buildings, as well as new businesses.  Some have already opened, and more will open in 2008.

Berkley is a great hometown.  It is more than a great location, more than the "best first home" for which it was recognized earlier this year.  It is our city, where we celebrate Berkley Days in May, the Art Bash in June, Cruise Fest in August, the Friends Book Sale in October and our Hometown Holiday Parade in December. The 75 Year Anniversary Celebrations during the year were enjoyed by residents and visitors.  Volunteers and city employees work together on these and other events which add to the quality of life in our hometown, Berkley.

To all our residents, from my family to yours, I wish a joyful celebration of the  Christmas and Hanukkah Holidays and a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year.
