Before you head to your tax preparer save yourself a little frustration by making sure you have your property tax documents with you. You will need your 2009 summer and winter tax amounts as well as your property taxable value for 2009. It is also recommended that you have your school district code:
School District Codes:
- 63050 - Berkley School District
- 63040 - Royal Oak School District
Finding your taxable value:
The taxable value can be found on your tax receipts and the assessment notice that you receive from Oakland County. Your assessment notice will list the taxable value for the current and previous year. Be sure you use the correct year.
If you have an escrow account with your mortgage company:
You may receive a statement from your mortgage company listing the amounts and dates paid for both your summer and winter 2009 property taxes.
If you pay your taxes directly yourself:
Maintaining documentation is important. Keep your receipts in a secure place where you can find them at tax time. Your receipts will have the amounts and dates paid. The receipt is usually attached to the bottom of your tax form.
If you are a homeowner and unable to find your 2009 property tax receipts, you can:
- Call the Treasurer's Office at 248-658-3310. For the homeowner only, Treasury will print a tax summary sheet which will provide all the information you need;
- You or your tax preparer can stop by City Hall and print your 2009 property tax summary sheet using the Public Access terminal at the front counter – no charge;
- Call the Oakland County 24 hour tax hotline at (888) 600-3773; or
- Log on to Access Oakland and purchase a copy
