City
of Berkley Receives Award!
The
City of Berkley was recognized on September 14, 2004 as
one of only thirty municipalities in Oakland County to have
the foresight and vision to become a founding partner in
the then newly formed Community Development Block Grant
(CDBG) program in 1974. The CDBG program was signed into
law in 1974 by President Ford. Since that time it has provided
communities across the country with federal money to be
spent in a wide variety of ways that will help benefit senior
citizens, disabled persons, low to moderate income persons,
and low to moderate income neighborhoods.
Over
the years, the City of Berkley has used these monies for
many projects, including:
- provide assistance to senior citizens with lawn maintenance
and snow shoveling;
- off-set costs related to sewer system maintenance;
- construct barrier free restrooms at the City Hall;
- buy large print books and books on tape for the City
Library.
The
City of Berkley looks forward to another thirty years of
partnership with Oakland County and the federal government
to ensure that the needs of all of our residents continue
to be met.
On
behalf of the City of Berkley, our City Planner for the
past seven years, Amy Vansen, also received the 2004 Best
Practice Award for the City's achievement of "Timely CDBG
Spending Performance."
