On May 23, 2007, the City of Berkley kicked off this important event with a Celebration Breakfast.  Guests were current and past members of City Council, current Department Heads and members of the current Boards and Commissions.  Presentations congratulating us on this important occasion were received by Governor Jennifer Granholm, United States Representative Joe Knollenberg, State Senator John Pappageorge, State Representative Andy Meisner, Oakland County Commissioner Vincent Gregory and Huntington Woods Mayor Ron Gillham.  We were entertained and honored by special guest, Charles Williams, the first Mayor of Berkley and portrayed by Mr. Greg Thom, former Chairman of the DDA.

On July 22, 2007, the City of Berkley showcased five beautiful homes to those wishing to attend the 75th Anniversary Homes Tour “Gems of Berkley”.  These homes were representative of the uniqueness that is Berkley - some historic and some newly renovated.  Guests were treated to a beautiful afternoon strolling the tree-lined streets of Berkley and peeking into the homes of the five families who prepared their homes for the enjoyment of over 300 attendees.  The Sabbagh, Novitsky, Spears, Pagac and Cliffe homes welcomed visitors.   This wonderful tour was prepared by Linda Bailey and Shirley Hansen, who volunteered many hours of their time to ensure a great time for everyone.

On October 14, 2007, two guided tours of Roseland Park Cemetery were conducted for over 90 interested people.  This was a Historical Walking Tour of Roseland Park Cemetery which was known as “Detroit’s Cemetery Beautiful”.   Stories of over 2 dozen “residents” of the cemetery were presented to the hearty participants in an over 2 hour walking tour.  Actors actually portrayed five special residents for the enjoyment of everyone.  These volunteers were employees Bruce Jerome, Bryan Bemis and Sheri Panozzo as well as volunteers Bill Ackerman and Pat Hughes.  The tours were conducted by Joe Meske and Mary Hughes, both employee volunteers.

Encores of the Homes Tour and the Cemetery Tour have already been requested.   Berkley is a wonderful place to live, work and play.  Members of numerous city and community groups work daily because of their love and concern for Berkley.  The hard work of every volunteer, in every organization, creates the welcoming atmosphere in Berkley alive.  We encourage you to join one of these many groups and get to know more of your neighbors and keep Berkley Beautiful!

Happy 75th Birthday Berkley!
