Berkley, MI – July 21, 2020 – On Monday, July 19, 2021, City Council approved a proclamation that declares July 22, 2021, as Master Plan Day within the City, along with a resolution that approves the distribution of the draft Master Plan to adjacent communities, public utilities, regional agencies, and to the public-at-large. Master Plan Day will kick off the 63-day public comment period as required by the Michigan Planning Enabling Act.

The City of Berkley has been actively engaged in working with Carlisle Wortman Associates (CWA), a professional planning consultant firm, to update the City’s Master Plan. City staff and consultants embarked on a year-long immersive community engagement campaign to garner diverse public input using a variety of outreach methods, including, surveys, social media polls, webinars, stakeholder discussions, focus group interviews, Planning Commission workshops, community meetings, corridor walking tours and activities, and a virtual open house. The draft Master Plan was steered by a committee of 15 community residents and the Berkley Planning Commission with assistance from CWA.

This updated Master Plan will help guide and establish informed decisions on land use, development, reinvestment, transportation, and housing within the City.

All of the public input collected was used by the steering committee, staff, and CWA to create a draft Master Plan that prioritizes and creates a community striving to enhance its economic vitality, preserve neighborhoods, and foster the City’s values of being caring, innovative, and welcoming. The draft of the Master Plan can be found at www.berkleymich.org/masterplandocument.

The City is asking the community to review the draft Master Plan and provide comments by September 23, 2021. All comments will be reviewed by the Planning Commission before they schedule a public hearing. After the public hearing, they will make a recommendation to City Council to approve and adopt the Master Plan. All comments may be submitted to the Community Development Department, 3338 Coolidge Hwy, Berkley MI 48072, or via email to masterplan@berkleymich.net.
