Berkley, MI – May 5, 2020 – At the regularly scheduled City Council meeting on May 4, 2020, the City Council approved a proclamation which declares May 20, 2020 as Master Plan Day within the City.

City staff has been actively involved in creating an immersive community engagement strategy with Carlisle Wortman Associates, a professional planning consultant firm, to update the City’s Master Plan.

“The most critical component of the Master Plan is community engagement,” said Erin Schlutow, Community Development Director. “From the beginning of this process, we strived to put forth an extensive community engagement strategy that had the potential to reach as many residents, business owners, and property owners as possible. This is still our goal and we hope to see everyone participate.”

Prior to the global pandemic, City staff attended several city boards and commissions, an elementary school PTA meeting, and conducted in-person stakeholder discussions in order to garner public input about the future of Berkley. Since then, staff and Carlisle Wortman Associates have shifted gears to create a hybrid of in-person and digital community outreach to keep that strong forward momentum. This outreach includes the announcement of a community-wide survey.

With City Council’s declaration of Wednesday, May 20, 2020, as "Master Plan Day," the City is “calling upon the citizens, business owners, and those representing all facets of the Berkley community, to participate in the Master Planning process.”

A community survey is an effective tool to garner public input on land use, transportation, housing, commercial corridors, and much more. Your feedback will help guide the City to plan the overall goals and objectives for the future of Berkley!
